Parents are role models for their children. If they have bad habits it is likely that their children will pick them up as well. That’s why it is important for parents to be aware of their role and think carefully about what kind of role models they are. Are there some habits that needs to be changed so that you will better fill that role?  I know that I do. One habit that I want to change are my diet.  I want to teach my children how to eat healthy and take care of their health. Their role models needs to show them how to eat healthy and teach them how to make the right choice regarding their diet. It is important to teach children how they can have healthy Relationships With Food. They are not born with the talent to eat healthy, they need to learn it.

Parents should never use food as a reward on good behavior or to comfort the child.  It teaches the child to eat if they are feeling bad or when they want’s to reward success. Many grown ups have this problem. They have developed eating and weight problems as they often see food as a reward for their hard work or when they are feeling down.

By making the children aware of the Healthy eating pyramid and talking to them about the variety of food. That some foods are good for your body but others aren’t. Children tend to take things very literally so it’s better to make sure they understand that it is okay to occasionally eat this “bad” food. We don’t want them to feel bad if they are in a party and “need” to eat cake.

By adding vegetables and fruits into your regular diet, you teach your child this habit. By exercising regularly your child is more likely to your child is more likely to choose physical activity.

This is a great article. I also try to set good examples for my children while trying to break bad habits that I’ve started. For many years, I’ve used “sweets” as rewards. Our local ice cream stand has celebrated many good report cards with us and cheered us up on sad days. But, these bad habits can be broken with better rewards…such as playing a fun game together or renting a new movie to watch. Or if food is the requested reward, then making something fun and healthy together is great. Kids love to help in the kitchen.

Additionally, schools need to be become more involved in setting good examples for healthy eating habits as well. My children’s elementary school has a nutrition committee and they set strict rules regarding what foods are not allowed in school. For example, they don’t allow fruit juice. Yes…no juice boxes allowed. Only milk and water can be packed in their lunches. Snacks are monitored too. No cookies and junky chips are allowed. They have a list of acceptable snacks that can be brought to school and it’s a very large list. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole wheat crackers, yogurt, pretzels, popcorn are some of the acceptable foods. The school has done a great job by involving the kids in teaching their parents to make better food choices for them.

I really appreciate how my children’s school has become so involved in setting a good example for the kids food choices. I really think that if kids experience good food examples both at home and at school, then they will be much healthier as adults.

Hi Claudine Wooley and thanks for your comment. I agree, schools must teach the children and guide the parents towards healthier choices – with the kids future in mind. Kids today are more conscious about what they should eat and what they should not eat than my generation was. But they still need the encouragement to make the right choices. Schools should play a big role in guiding the students towards a healthier way of life, not only the nutrition. They also need to teach about the importance of physical exercise
